The Oldsmobile 4-4-2 was that division's response to the unexpected success of rival Pontiac's GTO, the progenitor of muscle cars. Caught off guard by the GTO, Olds responded quickly with off-the-shelf parts and the initial '64 4-4-2 stood for 4 bbl carburetor, 4-speed transmission, and dual exhaust. For 1965 a larger 400 ci V8 was used, so they changed the definition to 4 bbl, 400 ci, and dual exhaust and offered an automatic transmission option. By the time this striking 1968 Olds 4-4-2 Convertible arrived, the 4-4-2 had become its own model and the muscle car wars were in full swing. This scarlet stunner features a strong 400 ci V8 that was new for '68 and shared its 4.25" stroke with the also new 455. Additional features include power steering, power front disc brakes, power top, a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, front and rear stabilizer bars, bucket seats with console, a newer stereo, and 225/70R14 tires wrapped around classic Olds wheels. As one of only 5,142 1968 4-4-2 Convertibles this roaring red rarity is a true collectible. This crimson cruiser runs and drives beautifully with the manual 4-speed transmission providing a level of satisfying driver involvement not present in today's automobiles.
