Ford's Ranchero was the first postwar coupe utility vehicle produced by a major American manufacturer when it was released for 1957. Ford of Australia is credited with being the first to mate an automobile chassis with a practical load bed in 1934, creating what they lovingly refer to as the "ute". Unlike the 1st generation Ranchero, which was based on their full-sized platform, the 2nd generation (1960-1965) Ranchero was based on the popular Falcon compact and sold well enough to knock Chevy's similar El Camino out of the market for several years. Our Poppy Red 1963 Falcon Ranchero is a fun example of the breed and ably demonstrates why these classics remain so popular. Pop the hood and you'll find a stout 289 V8 that's been fortified with a Howards Cams Rattler camshaft and a Holley 4bbl carburetor. Additional features include a 4-speed manual transmission with T-handle shifter, dual exhaust, an aluminum radiator, and Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in shaved red line tires (195/70R14 F, 205/70R14 R). This little trucklet runs well and is an absolute blast to drive around town, though the gearing might be a bit steep for extended highway cruises.
